Cesaroni Technology Incorporated (CTI) is announcing the introduction of the first commercial thermoplastic propellant-based solid rocket motor. Pro38 is a modular, reloadable solid propellant rocket motor system designed primarily for use in launching small experimental payloads by universities, colleges, research institutes and sport rocketry enthusiasts. The system is also intended to be a technology demonstrator for CTI's patented thermoplastic propellant (TPP) technology.
Years of research and development by CTI has yielded a patented formulation and process technology that allows the manufacture of small solid rocket (SRM) grains from raw materials in a fraction of the time required for traditional methods and materials. Added benefits include extended pod-life and recyclability. Binder constituents, fuel additives, ballistic modifiers and other ancillary components can be pre-compounded and stored for indefinite periods of time in readiness for weigh-in and mixing. In addition, modifications to the binder chemistry allows post-process cross-linking of the propellant to improve thermal stability and mechanical properties.
The Pro38 system utilizes a 38mm diameter reusable aluminium casing with pre-assembled reload cartridges to replace the consumable components, thereby reducing the cost-per-flight. The propellant grains are molded with cylindrical center-perforate geometry, and are stacked in modular fashion to achieve the desired total impulse for the application. Development work is underway at CTI with the goal of molding one-piece SRM grains with higher length to diameter ratios and more complex grain geometry. Potential applications include small sounding rockets, distress and illumination flares, line-hauling rockets, RATO boosters and more.
